Argan Oil

Argan Oil is a unique product from Morocco that if you haven’t heard of it, you should certainly look into it if you want lustrous, shiny hair and an alternative to creams and lotions for your skin. This oil is produced from the argan tree found in Morocco and was and still is used there for culinary purposes, but has also been discovered to possess qualities that will aid in hair and skin care.  The oil is produced initially by hand in a process still used today by intense manual work in cracking the argan nut to extract the kernels which are then ground and pressed to extract the oil. It usually takes one highly skilled worker about 45 minutes to produce enough to make a four ounce of oil. This is because attempts to industrialize the process have been unsuccessful and thus has created a special industry for the women’s’ cooperative in Morocco that produce it.

The secret to argan oil is the nutrient rich composition that includes linoleic acid; which has anti-inflammatory properties, along with vitamin E. Because of the effectiveness of argan oil in it’s pure form, make sure you’re buying it without additives like sulfates or other toxic chemicals that can reduce the qualities of the oil.

Argan oil is used often as a styling agent because it can tame and control frizz and provide the shine that you are looking for. One often-used example is just taking a few drops of argan oil in your palms and then applying it to your hair after blow-drying.  The benefit that many people are finding after using argan oil on their hair is the reduction of dry scalp and dandruff through scalp moisturization. Its healing attributes can reverse damage done to hair due to artificial chemicals and hair treatments.  Another advantage argan oil possesses is the uses in shampoos, conditioners and styling agents. There isn’t the usual greasy build up found in other products and all you get is shiny, easy to manage hair. If you’re interested in a more thorough treatment; argan oil can be used as a hair mask for overnight treatment, just make sure you use a towel to keep linens clean but you’ll find the results are far better than other products with harsh chemicals that can damage your hair and scalp.

Argan oil is no longer the exclusive secret of Morocco, now you can have it for beautiful hair and skin and don’t forget to try some for dinner as well (just not out of the same bottle..)
